Reports of the Life360 acquisition have been greatly exaggerated

Now almost 10 years later, customers, partners, and investors are still confused by misleading press releases and coverage. We are still working to correct leading sources. For example we finally got Dun & Bradstreet corrected just a few weeks ago. We keep finding news sources that incorrectly list PathSense as having been acquired by Life360.

Let us be clear: Life360 did not acquire PathSense. Life360 did not acqui-hire PathSense. There was no corporate transaction of any kind. PathSense has been, and remains, an independent, growing company with offices in Cardiff by the Sea, CA.

ac·qui·hire

/akwəˌhī(ə)r/

noun

an act or instance of buying out a company primarily for the skills and expertise of its staff, rather than for the products or services it supplies.

verb

buy out (a company) primarily for the skills and expertise of its staff, rather than for its products or services.

What actually happened

In late 2017 Life360 licensed PathSense technology to improve the accuracy and battery efficiency of their DriverProtect feature. Life360 themselves announced this in a press release. It is our standard, non-exclusive, non-transferable license. And it is not a license to all of PathSense IP. Only to certain components. The Life360 agreement is the same PathSense Source Code License Agreement we use for all of our customers.

An early 2018 Life360 press release and simultaneous TechCrunch coverage mischaracterized the relationship, and Crunchbase listed PathSense as a Life360 acquisition. This of course caused much confusion among industry partners, customers, and our own investors, confusion that persists to this day. TechCrunch corrected the article after we contacted them, but unfortunately the damage was done. Most everyone in the industry had already read the TechCrunch story. Crunchbase removed the incorrect information after we reached out to them.

Life360 is a PathSense customer. That's it.
